When speaking at women’s groups I often ask how many read Christian fiction, and typically about 1/3 of the hands are raised, if that. There seems to be a common misunderstanding in both the church and the world about Christian fiction. Christians often believe it to be shallow stories with no take away applicable to their lives, and feel it’s a waste of their time. They’re committed to only reading what’s commonly called ‘Christian living’ books that speak to a specific area in need of change.

The world, on the other hand, perceives Christian fiction as just another opportunity to deliver a sermon. They don’t believe the religious community could deliver anything with enough depth to hold them, and don’t want anyone preaching at them.

So what is Christian fiction and where does it fit in the world of literature? Maybe I should start by asking, what should it NOT do?

  1. I love Christian Fiction. I find most books of this genre to be very interesting and love doing without all the potty language.

  2. Years ago Christian Fiction was an escape. It was my way of filling up walls of pretty Christian atmosphere to bounce off of to get out of a depression. It since became a wonder of anything and everything. Some books are a message that I need to hear right now, when some are just pure entertainment with out all the coarseness of the world. I just plain love it.

  3. I just read The Guardians:Loving Eyes Are Watching by Richard Williams from the library that I thought you would be interested in reading. The author has been active in Christian Ministry for over 28 years. It’s a romance mystery where two people’s (a sister and brother) life is turned upside down and they find out where true help comes from. Two dogs will help them find their way back to the path of God’s love. This story has a great message for everyone.
The best Christian Fiction I have read in years.
