Book Give Away by Darlene Franklin


Darlene Franklin is visiting with us today and she’s giving away a copy of her new book, a compilation of three stories, Maple Notch Brides.  Here are the rules. You must ASK Darlene a question. I can be based on something she shared below, or something you’d like to know. If you only leave a comment saying you want to be entered in the contest, it won’t count.

I’m sorry, I wish I could include international entries, but this is limited to the U.S., although all comments are welcome.

Miralee wants “interesting” facts about me. The problem is, I think I’m fairly boring! Standard information: I was born in New Hampshire, grew up in Maine, spent twenty years in Denver before moving (back) to Oklahoma. (However, Utahis the farthest west I have ever traveled.) In spite of my New England upbringing, I love the west! I am divorced, have one daughter who is at home with the Lord and a son who lives close by with four precious grandchildren. I’m a Bible college and seminary graduate, and now get to “live the dream” of writing full time. My outside interests have shrunk as writing takes more of my time and crippling arthritis takes more of my health! I still play piano for our church choir.           To encourage any hopeful writers out there: Since I began writing full time 2½ years ago, the number of books under contract doubled in the first year and now I have about twenty books either in print or under contract! I didn’t have a single contract when I decided to try it full-time. And since I’m divorced, I am my sole support. So it can happen!

  1. Hi Darlene, I have not read any of your books and am looking forward to reading soon. I know about alcholism. My x, his Dad and uncles were alcholics and it is sad to have to deal with this problem in any family.
    Where do you get your ideas for your books? and pick their names?

    Alcoholism takes a toll on everyone involved . . . Healing and restoration is possible but not guaranteed.
    Ideas for my books? The ideas for my Vermont books came largely from folklore and twice-told tales about Vermont history. I also love to peruse historical timelines for jumping off points. (And lots of other places, but that’s what suggested these three stories!)
    Names? I went with biblical names for Prodigal Patriot, and for the third book, I chose popular names from the census information (goes back to people born in the 1850s or so). Beatrice, the hero in book 2, is my mother’s middle name.

  6. Marissa: I LOVE to talk about my books! I have published/contracted: six Christmas novellas (this year: Christmas at Barncastle Inn). Three contemporary romances with Heartsong. Five historical romances with Heartsong (Maple Notch Brides is a repack of three of the historical romances) Two cozy mysteries. I also have two longer historical romances with Moody Publishers (River North Fiction, 1 longer historical romance with Barbour, and a 4-novella anthology all to myself. That’s twenty, plus repacks, ebooks, and a bunch of nonfiction books with devotions and personal experience stories in them.

  9. Jo, I’ve been writing all my life. When I was ten, I noted in my diary that I wanted to be a writer (as well as missionary, detective, doctor). But I began writing seriously in the wake of my divorce, twenty years ago now.

  10. I’ve read Darlene’s cozies for a while now. I haven’t read any of her more recent books but would like to. My mother had RA and I have Fibromyalgia and I know it takes a tole on one’s body. I admire that Darlene is still writing!

  14. Hi Debbie! Thanks for your words of encouragement. I struggle with making sure I take advantage of the times I feel well to write. I tend to think “I’ll do that later” and then later I can’t. Silly me. I am proud of myself for finishing the rough draft of A Bride’s Rogue in Roma, Texas, coming out from Barbour next fall, last night! Now five novellas to write by March 1st . . .

  15. Amy, all the glory goes to God. That underlying conviction that God loves me and will carry me through the very worst of times informs everything I write . . . I tend to put my characters in some impossible situations!

Carrie: I wasn’t so much writing colonial fiction as historical fiction set in Vermont . . . and the real life story of Anne (Story?), who hid out from Tories in a cave while continuing to work the family farm appealed to me. So I wrote Prodigal Patriot. Because of course my hero (or his father) had to be one of the Tories trying to find them hiding in the cave.
