Laura Hilton, her husband, Steve, and their
five children make their home in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas. She is a pastor’s wife, a stay-at-home mom and home-schools three of her children. Laura is also a breast cancer survivor.
Her first book “Patchwork Dreams” in her Amish of Seymour series from Whitaker House released in April 2011, the second book, “A Harvest of Hearts” in September 2011, and the third in April 2012.

As a family, they enjoy taking mini-vacations around the area where they live. They have visited Blanchard Caverns, Mammoth Springs, Hardy, Memphis Zoo in Tennessee, and other spots.
She also enjoys playing Monopoly with her husband and one of her sons, or Clue with her younger children.

She hated having to quit school in the 8th grade to stay home and learn everything that makes a home run smoothly. But now she has earned her GED and is taking college courses, but her family is begging her to come home; her little sisters miss her. And there’s something about newcomer, Matthew Yoder that draws her attention. But is it enough to give up her dreams of education and join the Amish church?

Colleen, I love reading Amish books. And I heard someone mention that what you love reading is what you should write. I also have Amish in my ancestory. When my agent suggested it, I thought, well, I don’t know. There’s Beverly Lewis–the Queen of Amish fiction and I am not Beverly Lewis. But I thought I’d give it a try–and I love it. It is such a fun genre to write!
I would love to read this book! I am taking classes to complete my bachelors degree, while working full-time. Sometimes I wonder since I am not a teenager anymore, should I still try to complete it? Why do the Amish not want the women to have an education beyond the 8th grade? Ms Hilton, what do you like to read for fun? Ms Ferrell, I am following your blog. My email is tscmshupe@pemtel.net. You mentioned that you would love to take a vacation to Alaska. Would you want to take a Alaskan cruise or fly over there and just tour than? I have heard that the Alaskan cruises are great and would love to take one.

Laura, you have a lot on your plate being a Pastor’s wife and home schooling three of your children. When do you find the time to write! My real question is, when did you know you wanted to be a writer and how long did it take you to publish your first book?
On a personal note, I am a 12 year breast cancer survivor.

Sally, Amish believe that further education is prideful, and pride is a sin. But that said, they don’t stop learning. Many have to go to become an apprentice to learn a career in addition to farming or to make sure that their home ec skills have prepared them for marriage.
Any book that catches my attention is read for fun. I just finished reading a regency romance by Deborah Hale and Louise M. Gouge that was a pure pleasure to read.
Tammy, my characters introduce themselves. They tell me their names. I know, that sounds weird. And yes, I do hear voices talking in my head. They’re coming to take me away, haha… 🙂
Dawn, yes, my agent just pitched another three book series about the Amish to the publisher. I’m hoping…
Jo, I would love a cruise — but I’m not sure how I’d like to go. My son is talking about joining the Coast Guard after he earns his associates degree to fund the rest of his education, and the Coast Guard always stations them in Alaska at some point. I may have to go there to see my son!
June — congratulations to another survivor! I couldn’t have done it without other survivors coming out of the wood work and showing me it is possible! Praise to God for encouraging me so much during that time.
I always wanted to write. Always. And it took awhile to get published because I guess God thought I wasn’t ready. I had real good responses from publishers and even made it a ways into the process then they’d have over-committed for that genre, or had one of their more known authors write one similar, or something…

Laura, have you ever wanted to come visit Oregon? We have some beautiful light houses here on the Oregon Coast. My fav, is the Heceta Head lighthouse that is just north of Florence, Oregon. Debbie ~ Yes, I’d love to visit Oregon. I’ve seen some beautiful pictures of there, esp of the coast.
Lisa ~ Yes, there will be a third book in this series. It will release in April of 2012. I don’t know what the title will be yet though.

Nancye ~ Yes I have visited Amish communities. Other than the one in Seymour, Missouri, I’ve also been to Author, Illinois, and Shippsewanna (sp) Indiana. I want to go up to another Amish community in Missouri to research. Oh, and I live near an Amish community in Salem, Arkansas.
June ~ differences in religion is difficult to answer, since all religions are different. They are anabaptist – like Baptists and others that don’t believe in infant baptism. They are also works based like Catholics, and they are exclusive as they believe only Amish can be saved.
Marilyn, Absolutely. I’d love to have you go with me to Prince Edward Island. We’ll have fun exploring the island together!
Pam, I am what they call a “Seat of the pants writer” which means I know nothing. I let the characters tell the story. It’s so much fun that way. I don’t know if I could plot out a book and then write it. All the fun would be gone if I did.
Salena, I did a lot of research on my own. I found some commentaries on DVD about them, and I talked to some former Amish, and I’ve traveled to the community. Some Amish are willing to talk. Unfortunately, others are really stand-offish and won’t.
Julie, 🙂 How fun. I drove through Ohio once but I think I was in the wrong area for Amish. We were just passing through from Pennsylvania to Michigan so were only in the upper north eastern corner.
Laura, have you considered writing a book that deals with breast cancer? Your journey through breast cancer could be reflected through the main character.

I have really enjoyed reading all of the answers in the comments section. I didn’t realize that there were so many Amish communities throughout the U.S. For some reason I always thought that they were basically located in Indiana and Ohio.

Emma, it took me five months to write it, edit it and read through it. Six if you count waiting for and doing the publisher’s edits.
