KAYLA RUSSELL DOESN’T LIKE VALENTINE’S DAY

What should be Kayla’s favorite holiday is just another reminder that she hasn’t met someone special. The beautiful florist—and hopeless romantic—has nearly given up on love, when the man of her dreams walks into her shop…to buy flowers for another woman!

Former music superstar Derek Wood poses as a local deliveryman while he cares for his ailing mother. Derek is drawn to Kayla’s genuine spirit and natural beauty, but he can’t hide his identity forever. The man Kayla’s falling for doesn’t really exist, but the feelings they share are re al. Will Derek finally give Kayla a reason to love Valentine’s Day?

  2. I have a question for Kimberly. What is your favorite part of writing? How do you look for inspiration and story ideas?

    1. Hi, Nicole! I think my favorite part of writing is the actual process of seeing the story in my head come to live on my computer screen. I actually don’t look of inspiration or story ideas, they just hit me. Someone will tell me something and suddenly my mind takes what they said further and it turns into a story. For example this story was born out of my dislike for Valentine’s Day. I started writing it on Valentine’s Day last year. I don’t know how these thing happen, but I was thinking about how much I didn’t like the day and one thing led to another and my mind was creating a character who owned a florist shop who didn’t like Valentine’s Day.

  3. Hi DK. I can’t tell you what happens with Derek, but I will share with you about my work in progress. 🙂

I’m currently writing the second book in a series entitled Wildflower B&B Romance. This series takes place on a fictional island in Washington state. Anderson Island was my inspiration island for this series. The first book releases mid-April and is called Island Refuge. It’s not up on Amazon yet, but expect to see it pop up there in a few weeks.
    Thanks for asking.

  4. I love that you have chosen to write books suitable for the Heartsong franchise because I enjoy Christian Fiction. Have you ever been encouraged to write books that are more “mainstream” and feature suggestive language/situations?
I enjoyed this review and I look forward to reading this Book
    Connie

    1. Hi Connie, I’m glad you enjoy the Heartsong books! Sadly, Harlequin is closing the line in June. To answer your question, no one has ever suggested that I write mainstream fiction that features anything that would go against my Christian world view. I’m a strong willed person, and anyone who knows me wouldn’t bother trying. lol It wouldn’t be a waste of their time. I’m going to write what the Lord leads me to write.

  5. Hi Kimberly. When did you decide you were interested in writing novels, and how did you choose the genre of Christian Romance?

  6. Valentine’s Day was never my favorite holiday until this year. I think I would very much identify with the main character. What is your favorite holiday and why?

Thank you for the chance to read your book!

    Blessings,

    1. Hi, Wanda! I’m curious why Valentine’s Day is now your favorite. 🙂 For me it’s a toss up between Thanksgiving and Christmas. My family always gathers together during these holidays and it’s such a nice time. I guess Christmas would edge out Thanksgiving though simple because we celebrate the birth or our Lord.

      1. It’s not my absolute favorite but I always dreaded it until I met my soul mate this past year. This was the first year I have actually looked forward to it. Christmas is my favorite holiday for the reasons you described and more. 🙂

  7. Hi Brenda, I have loved reading romance novels since I was first introduced to the in the seventh grade. The first Christian books I read were the Love Comes Softly series by Janette Oke. I was drawn to books there were similar in length to the Heartsong line. I don’t recall the series names, but there used to be a couple different ones that I really enjoyed as I was growing up. I always had a book in my hand. As far as when I knew I was interested in writing novels that came much later in life. I was in my thirties when I decided it was something I’d like to try. 🙂

    1. Well, Joan, that’s like asking a woman how old she is. LOL. I self-published a book when I was thirty-five. That book is no longer available for purchase. My first traditional book released about seven years later.

  8. I noticed that Valentine’s Day is not Kimberly’s favorite and neither is it the favorite of the heroine of her new book. Is the book in any way partly autobiographical?

    1. Hi Edward, I wouldn’t call Kayla’s story autobiographical, but my dislike for the day certainly inspired the story. Kayla also sings which I do as well. Other than that, ours life stories are different. 🙂

  9. Hi Kim!
I’m always looking for Christian Genre books to read and I’m very glad Miralee has introduced me to yet another author that loves our Lord.
Do you find yourself reading through your books and see parts of your own life in them? I love books that teach in characters and look forward to read some of yours. Thank you for sharing this book. Joy

    1. Hi Joy, that’s a good question. I don’t read my books once they are published. I’ve read through them so many times to get to that point, that I never open them except to sign them. 🙂
All that being said, there are absolutely tidbits of my own life in all of my stories. For example in The Christmas Promise, my hero gets a concussion. I husband once got a concussion while using a backhoe–his experience inspired that particular injury.
Several of my books include musicians. I taught piano lessons for eighteen years and won a scholarship to college based on my singing. A Valentine for Kayla mirrors several aspects of my life, but yet we are very different.

      1. That is so cool, Kimberly! We’ve been friends for years, and I just learned something new about you. I knew that you played piano and loved music and at least one of your sons is musical, but I didn’t know you were an accomplished singer (to the point of earning a scholarship!) That’s awesome!

    1. Hi Kelly, my degree in Behavioral Science is a huge help to my writing. I always want to know and understand why people are the way they are. Understanding the how the why behind the actions helps me create my characters. I haven’t touched on any mental illnesses in my stories, but if I did, my degree would help with that as well.

I know you didn’t ask, but it was a HUGE help when I taught piano. More than once I figured out before I was told when students had disabilities of any kind and I generally knew how to move forward with that student to teach them in a way they would be successful.

  10. Where do you get your book ideas? Is it experience, observation or just plain creativity? I also love dark chocolate!

    1. Hi, Sharon! It’s nice to meet another lover of dark chocolate.:)
l My book ideas come mostly from experience, observation and creativity. For example I have a series releasing mid-April that takes place at a B&B. That book was inspired while doing research for my series that takes place in Leavenworth, WA. My husband’s aunt was taking my mom and I around town and she stopped in at her niece’s B&B. I was so impressed by the place that I couldn’t get the idea of a B&B out of my mind. My mom and I had taken the train to Leavenworth and the train at one point runs along the Puget Sound. I put those two things together and came up with a story about a B&B on a small island in Washington. 🙂
So it’s part observation, experience, and creativity.

  11. Hi Kimberley, My mother has been getting into reading Christian romance novels. She lost my Dad about 1 1/2 years ago. She absolutely gets ti tally lost with each novel she reads and they give her MUCH joy . My parents love was so incredibly strong and I was thinking it would be a great example of how love is supposed to grow and like a good wine get better as it ages. I’ve learned so much watching my Mother’s portrayal of humble acts and how she always put her spouse ahead of her own desires and needs. Surely there is an art to balancing all that sustains a relationship. With that being saud, my question is..have you ever been inspired to write about mature relationships and life long loving relationships blessed by God?

    1. Hi Joann. How wonderful that your parents had a strong, loving relationship. Regarding being inspired to write about mature relationship, I’m taking that to mean older people. If that is the case then no. Generally speaking an older couple is a hard sell in category romance, so I’ve never considered going there.
I have shown secondary characters with mature life long loving relationships. In A Match for Meghan Ben’s parents were a wonderful example of a mature loving Christ centered married couple, In the Christmas Promise, Keira’s mother and father-in-law were as well. In A Holiday Proposal we see Holly’s parent’s relationship too. So I do include them, but not as the main characters. 🙂

    1. I Merry, to answer your question. No. My background in singing, piano, and worship leading inspired him.
I actually tried to find one that I could pattern him after, but I’m not up to date on secular music and none of today’s Christian artists quite fit him either.
      Thanks for the question. 🙂
